The topic I chose to explore and inform others more about is about gender fluidity and all its components. I also will be talking about what Kansas is doing to be inclusive and what they are doing that negatively affects those with different gender identities. So why this topic and why now you may ask, this topic is extremely important because it is the new generational identification. Not every person only identifies as she or he, therefore it is important for people to understand and respect the way people wish to be identified. It is important for Kansas to be progressive about the methods they use to make it accessible for people do express their identity and what they feel.
On one hand many people believe that one should be called whatever they choose. These people are believing that people should be able to dress and group themselves wherever they would like, use whatever facilities and look however they would like. This is the perspective I believe and align with. I believe Kansas should be make more proactive movements that accept those who identify as non-binary, bigender, pangender, androgynous, neutrois and demigender. On the other hand, people think that you are only what you are born with, and you can never be anymore or any less. They believe that a person is given their identity when they are born and that is male or female. On this side of things, I do not completely disagree with everything they say.
While research I have found that one of the ways places in Kansas and in other States are being inclusive are constructing bathrooms that are not specified to one gender. Like a family restroom, but they have stalls, and anyone can use them. The issue people who don’t agree with this believe that this would allow old men to be in the same restroom as young girls. They think it would create an environment for bad things to happen. Since you can’t have cameras in a bathroom for obvious reasons, one could not know for sure what is going on in the bathroom when no one is looking. Just recently, very close to Lawrence in Gardner, Kansas the school board voted 5-2 against the $80,000 funding for the construction of a unisex restroom they also voted to keep male and female sports teams separate.
Calvin Freiburger with LifeSiteNews said “Conservatives argue that forcing children and teens to share intimate facilities with members of the opposite sex violates their privacy rights, subjects them to needless emotional stress, and gives potential male predators a viable pretext to enter female bathrooms or lockers by simply claiming transgender status, regardless of whether they are sincerely dysphoric.” I do not agree with this statement though, because if these restrooms and locker rooms were built, the kids/people would not be forced to use the unisex corridors. There would still people men and women’s restrooms for people who identify as male or female to use. Although I do understand where this could still be considered discriminatory towards unisex/gender fluid people.
Overall though when it comes to young people who just want to express themselves, I think these bathrooms would be a great start to Kansas being inclusive towards genderfluid people.
